The Albanese Government has implemented a coordinated national strategy to combat the rise in antisemitism, bringing together law enforcement, legislative reforms, and community support measures.
National Leadership and Coordination
The Commonwealth, state and territory governments have united to address antisemitism through a coordinated national approach. This includes:
Establishing a National Database to track antisemitic crimes and incidents, creating one national reporting system to better coordinate responses
Convening National Cabinet specifically focused on antisemitism, with leaders unanimously condemning hate crimes
Creating a framework for Commonwealth, state and territory Attorneys-General to share best practices across jurisdictions
The government has created new positions and institutional structures to address antisemitism:
Appointment of Ms Jillian Segal AO as Australia's first Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism
Referral of antisemitism in Australian universities to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights
Legislation to appoint Australia's first National Student Ombudsman
Commitment to also appoint a Special Envoy for Islamophobia
Dedicated Law Enforcement Response
The government has established specialised operations to investigate and prosecute antisemitic crimes:
AFP Special Operation Avalite, which has received 166 reports with 15 under active investigation
36 people charged with antisemitic-related offences across jurisdictions, including eight people charged with 59 offences
Strong coordination between federal intelligence agencies and state police operations, including Strike Force Pearl (NSW) and Operation Park (Victoria)
Full deployment of AFP resources, with 21 experienced counter-terrorism investigators and analysts working nationally
Strengthened Legal Framework
The government has introduced landmark legislation to combat antisemitism:
Banning the Nazi salute and hate symbols in public, effective January 2024
Criminalising doxxing - the malicious release of personal information
Introducing new legislation to criminalise hate speech, including the urging of violence against groups
Implementing mandatory minimum jail sentences for terror crimes and the display of hate symbols (although lowkey, not sure how i feel about mandatory minimum sentencing)
Community Protection and Support
Substantial funding and support has been provided to protect Jewish community sites:
$32.5 million to enhance security at Jewish community facilities including synagogues and schools
Additional $25 million for improved safety measures at Jewish sites across the country
$250,000 towards replacement of Torah Scrolls housed in the Adass Israel Synagogue
Funding for security infrastructure including camera systems, access controls, lighting, and security guard services
The comprehensive approach demonstrates the government's commitment to ensuring all Australians can feel safe practicing their faith and participating in community life, while sending a clear message that there is no place for antisemitism in Australia.
