The Albanese Government's $500 million Driving the Nation Fund supports Australia's transition to electric vehicles through a comprehensive national charging infrastructure and fleet investment program.
Prior to this initiative, Australia lacked a cohesive national network of EV charging infrastructure, with significant gaps in regional areas creating 'range anxiety' for potential EV adopters.
Announced in 2022 with an initial commitment doubled to $500 million, the Driving the Nation Fund encompasses several key initiatives. The program includes partnerships with NRMA to create a national 'backbone' of 117 fast-charging stations approximately every 150km on highways, connecting all capital cities.
The fund also supports the automotive sector through the $60 million DRIVEN program for dealerships and repairers, and establishes Hydrogen Highways with up to $80 million in co-investment with states and territories.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) manages additional funding streams focused on reducing road transport emissions through various projects and innovations.
Key Statistics and Features:
Total funding pool of $500 million (doubled from initial $250 million)
117 EV charging stations across national highways ($39.3 million)
