The Labor Government has made a historic $573.3 million investment in women's health, addressing longstanding gaps in Australia's healthcare system.

This comprehensive package includes the first PBS listing of new oral contraceptive pills in more than 30 years, with Yaz and Yasmin now available to approximately 50,000 women at $31.60 for a three-month supply (or just $7.70 with a concession card), saving hundreds of dollars annually.

Similarly, the first new menopausal hormone therapies in over 20 years have been added to the PBS, with treatments like Prometrium, Estrogel and Estrogel Pro now saving around 150,000 women up to $577 per year with a concession card.

The government is also significantly enhancing women's access to long-acting reversible contraception by increasing Medicare rebates by up to 150 per cent, saving approximately 300,000 women up to $400 in out-of-pocket costs annually.

Additionally, the package includes funding for 11 new endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics, bringing the total to 33 nationwide, which will also provide specialist support for menopause.

From July 2025, a new Medicare rebate for menopause health assessments will be introduced alongside the development of Australia's first-ever national clinical guidelines for menopause care, helping address a condition that severely impacts the daily lives of one in five Australian women.

Summary:

  • First contraceptive pills added to PBS in 30 years, saving women up to $190 annually

  • Medicare rebates increased by 150% for long-acting contraceptive procedures

  • 11 new endometriosis and pelvic pain clinics, bringing the total to 33 nationwide

  • New Medicare rebate for menopause health assessments from July 2025
