The Albanese Government has overhauled Australia's workplace laws to boost wages, improve job security and strengthen workers' rights, with new rules on everything from pay secrecy to enterprise bargaining.
The reforms have delivered significant changes to:
Job Security and Flexible Work
Restrictions on fixed-term contracts
New workplace rights on pay disclosure
Enhanced flexible work arrangements
Ban on pay secrecy clauses
Gender Equality
New protected attributes including breastfeeding and gender identity
Equal remuneration principles
Enhanced sexual harassment protections
Enterprise Bargaining
New multi-enterprise bargaining framework
Sunsetting of 'zombie' agreements
Improved agreement-making processes
Early independent review findings show positive outcomes, with a 27% increase in employees covered by collective agreements between September 2022 and September 2024. The reforms have also contributed to gradual increases in real wages and improvements in the gender pay gap.
