Australia welcomes its largest-ever cohort of 1,750 trainee GPs in 2025, with one-third specialising in rural medicine as this important field nears official recognition.
A record 1,750 doctors are beginning government-funded GP training in 2025, with one-third specialising in Rural Generalism - a field that equips doctors with additional skills in emergency care, obstetrics, mental health and anaesthetics needed in country communities. Rural Generalism has now reached a critical milestone, with the Australian Medical Council recommending its recognition as an official medical specialty following a six-year review process.
General practice has regained its position as the most popular career choice for medical graduates for two consecutive years. To further boost rural healthcare, the government has introduced a fast-track pathway for qualified GPs from New Zealand, the UK and Ireland, who must spend their first ten years practising in rural or regional areas.
