The Albanese Government has launched Australia's most ambitious threatened species plan, committing $224.5 million to prevent any new extinctions of native plants and animals while protecting 110 priority species and 20 priority places.
Released in October 2022, the Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 responds to the 2021 State of the Environment Report which revealed Australia's environment was in poor and deteriorating health. The Plan sets out a pathway for threatened species conservation and recovery over the next 10 years.
Through the Saving Native Species program, the government has committed $224.5 million to boost outcomes for threatened native plants and animals. The Plan focuses on priority species and places identified by independent scientists using principles including risk of extinction, multiple benefits, and uniqueness.
At the core of the plan are clear objectives and targets. These include preventing any new extinctions of plants and animals, and protecting and conserving at least 30% of Australia's land mass.
Species Protection:
110 priority species identified by independent scientists
Comprehensive statutory Conservation Advice for listed species
Integration of First Nations knowledge in conservation
Focus on species at imminent risk of extinction
Place Protection:
20 priority places (6 islands and 14 mainland locations)
Target to protect 30% of Australia's land mass
Creation of safe havens for endangered species
Support for habitat restoration
For Implementation:
$224.5 million through Saving Native Species program
Partnerships with governments, First Nations peoples, researchers and communities
Regular monitoring and public reporting
Contemporary conservation planning approaches
